Dow Jones Sustainability World Index Recognizes Caterpillar's Leadership For The Fifth Consecutive Year.
For the fifth consecutive year, Caterpillar Inc. has been selected a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). The index recognizes leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Their annual review of DJSI World companies is an integrated assessment of economic, social, and environmental criteria with a strong focus on long-term shareholder value.
"This is a prestigious award with increasingly stringent standards. It is gratifying to see that our strong focus on sustainability continues to be recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index," said Ali M. Bahaj, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the company's sustainable development initiative and environmental, health and safety performance.
The 2,500 largest companies in the Dow Jones Global Index were invited to take part in the comprehensive assessment of the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, environmental and social performance. Of the 2,500 global companies assessed, only 309 companies—Caterpillar among them—met the standards for listing on the DJSI World.
Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the first global index to track with an external auditor the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Research for the DJSI World is conducted by SAM Group, an independent asset management company specializing in sustainability investments. "SAM's research shows that Caterpillar is ahead of its peers in a number of areas. Caterpillar is an industry leader with product stewardship – integrating environmental aspects into product development," said Carl-Johan Francke, equity analyst at SAM Group.
With ACERT® Technology, Caterpillar has taken the lead in reducing engine emissions while improving fuel efficiency, engine performance and durability. Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services and Certified Cat Rebuild are reducing the need for mined raw materials by recycling and rebuilding existing Caterpillar machines, parts and components. Caterpillar participates in the EPA Climate Leaders program, and early in 2005 the company committed to reduce the intensity of its global greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2010.
In 1995, Caterpillar established the Environmental Excellence awards program, which recognizes superior environmental performance within its facilities. As a result, facilities have eliminated hazardous waste and landfill waste and reduced wastewater discharges. Caterpillar, jointly with its dealers, continues to work with customers to provide them with sustainable solutions in both mining and forestry practices.
For 80 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been building the world's infrastructure and, in partnership with its worldwide dealer network, is driving positive and sustainable change on every continent. With 2004 sales and revenues of $30.25 billion, Caterpillar Inc. is a technology leader and the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines.
